Fours Head 2009

Tagged:

One JCBC men's crew travelled down to the Tideway on Saturday 14th November with the intention of racing in the Fuller's Head of the River Fours. This crew had a put a great deal into training this term both with their University Fours crews and in this crew. The race was, however, unfortunately abandoned 10 minutes before crews were due to boat as the Tideway was deemed unrowable past Hammersmith due to high winds.

University Fours 2009

The men's side of the club entered three promising fours into the University Fours races this year. The two coxed fours were hit with incredibly bad luck in their first race and falling victim to leaves jamming the rudder (the rudder of the first IV even snapped off!) causing both crews to crash out before completing the race. The Coxless Four got off to a good start, even moving slightly inside station on LMBC until they had difficulty steering round First Post allowing a clear victory for LMBC.

Cambridge Autumn Regatta

JCBC entered several boats into the Cambridge Autumn Regatta and put out good performances in every event.

Men’s IM3 Coxed Four: Beat Broxbourne RC, Beat First and Third, Lost to Cantabs in the final.
We took to the water for our first race in what was a completely scratch crew; needless to say some of the rowing up to the start was pretty atrocious. However we quickly pulled ahead of Broxbourne in the first round and finished ¾ of a length up without too many problems, much to our surprise. This meant we now found ourselves facing the only other college to have entered Cambridge Autumn, First and Third, in the final. We were certainly well matched – we pulled away by a quarter of a length at the start but didn’t increase our margin much throughout the race – we won by about ½ a length, much to Alexis’ delight (and Izzi’s disgust).

We rolled up to the final in the knowledge that we were facing a crew who had trained much harder than us (i.e. they had had some practice outings) and were probably fitter and stronger than us. So it wasn’t any great surprise when they dropped us off the start and went on to win by a couple of lengths. Despite this, for a scratch crew to reach the final of an IM3 event with 10 entrants, beating one of our main rivals along the way, is pretty pleasing for this stage of the season.

Men’s IM3 Coxless Pair: Beat Cantabs, Beat Durham School in the final
We had never rated higher than 18 before race day in this combination, and so the practice start on the way up to the start was a bit of a shock to the system. However we quickly dropped Cantabs off the start and pulled out to around 4 lengths before dropping the pressure; a good first row to settle the nerves. As soon as we had returned to the boathouse we got a phone call from the Durham School coach asking to bring forward the final, so we jumped straight back in the boat and headed back up the start. Durham held us off the start and we were only around half a length up when they brushed the bank, giving us a decisive lead. They then steered into our lane and some cunning steering from Christian meant they were rowing in our wash – we crossed the line around 2 lengths ahead to win what will be Christian’s last race for JCBC.

Men’s Novice 1x: Won two rounds, lost in the semi-final

Peterborough Summer Regatta

Tagged:

JCBC converged on Peterborough from all parts of England (and in one case, Germany) with the aim of winning some much needed ARA points. Two fours and an eight were entered on both the Sat and Sun as well as Henry Hughes rowing in Nov 1x on the Sunday. The conclusion to take from racing was quite simple – no rowing/training for 6 weeks and no practice outings does not make a four go very fast. Having said that the Nov 4+ won their heat on the Saturday and the IM3 4+ did likewise on the Sunday but both failed to qualify for the final.

The eight however was a different story – a practice outing on Saturday morning told us we could certainly move an eight better than we could a four. In the Nov 8+ race on Saturday we found ourselves in a two-horse race for 1st place with Nottingham RC – after literally being level the entire 1k course and leaving the other two eights around 20 seconds behind we were pipped to the post by about a foot. However the eight then redeemed itself by winning on the Sunday night by a large margin over City and Auriol Kensington. Henry Hughes also put out a very good performance in the single, dominating his heat and only finishing around 2 lengths off the winner in the final.
