Jesus College Boat Club

On Saturday 3rd March, a crew made up of seven seniors and a novice went to the Women’s Head of the River Race (the Lents were brought forward a day to accommodate the Women’s HoRR).  Again this was a very solid row – whilst fatigue was evident after the four days of the Bumps, we still finished in a respectable 146th place.

One of the goals of Michaelmas was to get a new group of novices involved and trained up, and in this regard we had a great Michaelmas term.  The fresher’s fair sign up at the start of term saw an extremely large proportion of the year signing up to try rowing.  Our first promising result was that of our novice men’s first VIII coming 4th in the Queen’s ergs competition, with one of our rowers pulling the fastest erg overall.  NM2 and 3 both also ranked highly in their divisions.  

The next 2 competitions of note were Emma sprints and Clare novices.  Whilst unfortunately without any overall winners for us, both NM1 and NM2 rowed well and were beaten only by the finalist/winners of their divisions.

The main event of term was the Fairbairn cup races in which, on the novice side, we entered 4 men’s boats and 2 women’s boats.  Our NW1 came 14th and our NM1 came 9th – so, whilst there is room for improvement with these rowers, there is definitely promising talent.

The Lent Bumps 2011 took place Tuesday 1st to Saturday 5th March. JCBC will represented by 4 men's crews and 2 women's crews (and also a 5th men's crew which unfortunately did not get on).

With 5 men’s teams and 3 women’s teams, JCBC’s Novice squad was the best represented of all colleges (including Queens) at Queens Ergs this year. Great team spirit and a lot of effort ensured that the Jesus results were equally as impressive as the turnout.

W1 won the women’s competition with an avg. split of 1:50.7 seconds, completing the 8x500m race 13.6 seconds faster than the runners up! M1 came an agonising second, with an avg. split of 1:30.7 seconds they were just 1second per man behind winners Churchill. Nick Parkes of Jesus NM1 also recorded the fastest individual men’s time of the event.
